The Fund was set up in 1911 by His Majesty King George V specifically to reward distinguished actors and actresses in financial need. The KGVF continues to be supported by the Privy Purse Charitable Trust.

To be eligible to receive a grant a person must be aged 60 or over, a British citizen, and have been an actor or actress for at least 15 years. Awards are given to actors and actresses who merit recognition for their work and are in need of financial help.
